  Weight Control during Pregnancy  
     
  Weight gain is part of pregnancy,
but you can make every pound count.
 
     
  Now that you’re eating for two, you may need to eat a bit more – but not as much as you think. So how much is too much? That depends on your age and what you weighed before you became pregnant.

The ideal total weight gain should be between 10 and 12.5kg as you and your baby grow. From being only pear-sized, your uterus will eventually grow to a size larger than a watermelon. The distribution of weight gain is as follows:
 
 
 
     
  Most pregnant moms do not gain much weight in the first three months. However your weight may increase tremendously during the second trimester (4th to 6th month). Weight gain slows down to about 1kg a month during the last three months.  
     
  Managing your weight
It is natural to gain some weight while you are pregnant. Unless advised by your doctor, it is important that you do not go on a diet to lose weight during pregnancy as that may be harmful to you and your baby. Research has shown that women with a low weight gain were twice as likely to have a pre-term delivery than those with an average weight gain.
 
     
  Maintain and achieve your healthy weight by
Seek professional advice from your doctor and dietitian.
Eating a well-balanced diet.
Restrict intake of high fat, high sugar and high calorie food.
Exercise regularly. Take time for a 20 to 30 minutes brisk walk 3 times a week.
